Nutrition, Support, Education.

Many of the impoverished populations of Laos can be found with smiles on their faces though their daily lives lack basic needs such as proper nutrition, basic medical care, and access to sufficient education.

The Lao Children’s Foundation strives to fills the gaps in providing the resources and foundational pieces to reshape their futures.

Why Laos?

Laos is one of the poorest countries in Asia having gone through more than 30 years of civil war and the Vietnam war. In its history, over 270 million cluster bombs were dropped on Laos by B52 bombers over the course of nine years, some weighing more than five tons. This alone makes Laos the most bombed country in the world.

Today, there are an estimated 80 million still-active cluster bombs scattered in the Laos which cause injury and death at random as citizens cross through its countryside. The trickle-down effect is a population that remains high in homelessness and poverty. Often, the Laotian children are called to aid in supporting their families and, in doing so, must give up the opportunity to attend school.

This is a cycle that the Lao Children’s Foundation hopes to end.

This Lao lady found a child without any clothes on, and took the child to go get clothes. A very kind soul.

Left over bombs from the war. That have been sitting there for 8+ years.

Why Now?

Many Laotian people live in rural areas with no electricity or running water. Their primary source of food depends on fishing, growing rice, or foraging for food in jungles laden with unexploded mines left from the Vietnam War. There are no opportunities for jobs so those same tasks must be split between feeding family members and generating income.

The impoverished population of Laos is in need of so many essential items that many of us take for granted daily: clothing, medicine, vitamins, school supplies, bathroom essentials, etc… The lack of consistency in available clean drinking water or nutritious foods is even more critical.

The time is now.

While Khamphan Khammang has lived in the United States since 1982, he has never forgotten his roots. While working to build a life in America for his family, his dream to return to Laos and give back always waited patiently for just the right time.
